What I have learnt this semester through MPI104?

Before the beginning of this semester I thought I knew plenty about the internet, in regards to what I thought was vital to being able to use the internet effectively. But after learning about blogs, applications and creating several accounts, my perceptions have changed dramatically. I have learnt that it is actually pretty easy to create a blog that is internet based, allowing anybody anywhere also with the internet to be able to read my words that I see fit to convey my opinion on. When I started my blog I was really confused on how it worked and also I would be able to maintain it, but I found out that it takes a matter of seconds to get on your blog, make your post and change your template just for the hell of it. I also learnt that you can pretty much customize your template in every single way, regarding you know all the tricks. I also applied for a flicker account, and at the time just thought to be another password and username to remember, but once played around it and watched other people using flickr, I began to understand the capabilities and the barriers such an application can overcome. But after getting through the first term rather shaky, I tried to focus and get my head more around the idea the next term. I learned about other types of software programs and what they are built for, like a FTP (File transfer protocol) which is used for uploading and transferring files onto the internet. I also learnt about the pros and cons of using such systems and also a RSS that updates you on certain feeds and their stages. Then I continued on learning about Technorati, and the way it worked. At first I didn’t understand the need for such a program, a program to manage blogs?? But i soon realized that it was a whole lot more than that, and that it was a lot more complicated with its ranking and authority procedures. Then finally wrapping it up with the programs fetch and iweb, I probably wouldn’t have even tried to use these programs before this class, But i found out how they work together to transfer data and files of the user onto the internet building a web page and basing it on the net.

Technorati

Technorati is predominately a search engine that works for blogs, which makes it more difficult to other search engines as they may bring back other web page,s music, images, videos and more. Making it alot harder to simply locate a certain blog from all the other things that have some of the similar tags. Also the Technorati searching system has a authority search, where it ranks each blog determining which has the most authority and which is ranked the number 1 blog of the time. This is determined by how interesting you blog actually is, the more people that come to read you blog, the higher your ranking becomes.

FTP- File Transfer Protocol

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is a software program that transfers files and uploads them to an internet server.
Just to note some other uses,
-- it promotes the sharing of files (data or computer programs)
-- encourages indirect or implicit use of remote computers
-- shields the user from variations in file storage systems
-- transfers data reliably and efficiently

Some positives that come from using a File Transfer Protocol include being able to access the site from pretty much anywhere. Using the FTP can become risky as a password is always needed before the transfer can begin, and while using an FTP connection it can become unstable and data becomes lost, failing to reach its desired location, allowing for any personal information to be stolen or changed. As often as this may happen these problems can be avoided by using updated programs such as FTPS and SFTP.

After looking over Css, I think its rather interesting in the fact that things can be made to accommodate everybodys needs, and make everything that little bit more personal. It doesn't even matter in what aspect you want to customize, you can just be edited in the bigger pieces and the little. You can change a thing called a template, which pretty much allows you to change the whole page around, and add images and videos and even little pointless stuff, like pages counters and calendars. Some of things i have found have actually been really cool. click here to check out my templates.

Experience gained from MPI104 sem1

Before coming to the MPI104 class i had a very vague idea of how the internet worked, and the potential that it had hidden away. I had a rather distorted idea that the internet was made up by absolute geniuses, who spent hours on end unlocking the mysteries of the world wide web. When in fact i have been studying this subject for about 10 weeks or so and I’m already being to understand how web pages are put together, and how they can be built piece by piece using small pieces of code. It took me awhile to get my head around the face that each single piece of code is unique and stands for a certain reason, and that I just one small piece is missing then huge pieces of the puzzle go missing.

By playing around with a number of different applications, such as flickr, delicious and blogger, has giving me a huge perspective on their different features. With my flickr account i have really enjoyed working out to put photos up and tag and group them. But my favourite part is being able to join heaps of groups such by searching for them. There are so many interesting images of flickr too, you can pretty much search for any image you want and you will find something close to it. Blogger was one of the coolest tools iv used, as iv felt what its like to have a presents on the internet, where i can write whatever i want. The delicious account i had was rather interesting, i got to look out how delicious works and the applications that come with presenting things, out of all three my favourite would have to be a tie between flickr and blogger, and I’m sure i will continue to practise making links and trying to understand the more as i continue at university.

I think that 'Delicious' has a completely diffrently feel to anything iv really used before. It is pretty much based around bookmarking web pages on the internet, so that you can access them wherever you can get the internet with out having to take them with you.

Flickr is a rather interesting program, i like how you can upload heaps of photos and pretty much join whatever group you want. after a while its pretty straight forward and easy to understand. I like how everyone can express their own style and run with other peoples, and use them for inspiration. im going to definatly continue to us flickr. Iv joined a crazy group just for the hell of it, their not to bad.
Check out my flickr acount click here.
